Not having ever been a parent, I've watched these competitions with a detached curiosity, often wondering just who the children are attempting to win these accolades for? Like the soccer or hockey parents who lose their collective minds when a ref dings their precious on either the pitch or the ice, it feels more and that these brainiac competitions are more about the parents' desires, rather than the child's.

Both Piers Morgan and Tucker Carlson’s vindictive behavior are a master class in straight white fright.

As the media obsessed over Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview, many interrupted their dissection of the “royal dis heard ‘round the world” to revel in the schadenfreude of another Piers Morgan screwup.

Morgan stormed off the set of the show he co-hosts, Good Morning Britain (GMB), after being tactfully, yet forcefully confronted by the show’s dashing weatherman, Alex Beresford, over Morgan’s insistent, irrational, and often unethical attacks on Ms. Markle.

Full disclosure, I’m not a fan of the royals or royalty in general; still, I admire Queen Elizabeth II. Maybe it’s her longevity. Or how she chaperoned the United…

That the Chinese government has its hand in all Chinese national and multinational companies should caution folks to not make this a racist stereotype; that Beijing, and specifically the CPC, is an investor in all businesses in some form or another—part ownership, investment, or even specific regulatory favoritism. The behavior of said investor is no different than Google or Facebook's behavior once they've acquired a property. It's just business.

Dear Friends and Subscribers to the ADC in Asia daily newsletter!

I hope this note finds you all well. I wanted to give you an update on my plans and ask for your input.

When I launched ADC in Asia three years ago, it was an attempt to help me understand more about China and its role in the world as an emerging political and economic power; I wanted to see if it was true, that a rising tide raises all ships and to see what impact the country’s growth would have on all of the APAC countries, and I…

Breakfast of Champions: Scrambled eggs with Korean pork dumplings.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for many of my friends in the United States, what with the pestilence, the lack of leadership, the hoarding in the supermarkets, and it’s not even the post-Apocalyptic dystopian future we were promised.

However, what’s been slowly creeping into my Facebook feed of late are the first hints of food boredom.

Even those who can afford to order in their favorite Chinese or Mexican, those menus are getting a bit long in the tooth. …

Watching Americans storm the shelves of supermarkets for foodstuffs would be hilarious if it wasn’t so alarming.

Hong Kong, with a population of about 7.5 million has seen a little more than 130 cases* of diagnosed COVID-19 infections with four confirmed deaths. About a month ago we had a three-day to one-week run on toilet paper because of social media rumors about shortages and that 2-ply and 4-ply TP could be used as an alternative to masks. Masks had been sold out citywide for about two weeks.

But, and this is a city where almost everything has to be flown…

“The most serious blow suffered by the colonized is being removed from history and from the community. Colonization usurps any free role in either war or peace, every decision contributing to his destiny and that of the world, and all cultural and social responsibility.”

— Albert Memmi, The Colonizer and the Colonized

To give credit where it’s due, the coronavirus accomplished something neither Carrie Lam’s government nor her Beijing overlords were capable of doing: return peace to the streets of Hong Kong after more than seven months of social unrest.

While the firebombs and vandalism against the police and corporate…

Lennon Wall, Aberdeen Promenade, Hong Kong — Anthony Duignan-Cabrera

Greetings from Hong Kong.

I’ve been receiving instant messages and emails from friends and family all over asking if my husband Bob and I are OK. I just wanted to let everyone know that, yes, we are fine. We tend not to get involved in pro-democracy demonstrations in countries where we are guests and not actual residents or natives.

I would be lying if I didn’t say that the tone of the city has changed in recent weeks. It’s a slow, ballooning tension, commiserate with the heat and humidity that is summer in the subtropics.

The demonstrations in recent days…

Slouching Towards Bethlehem (Revisited)

My parents were immigrants.

My father’s brother sold his home in Chile so my father could travel to Cuba, then Florida and finally settle in Los Angeles in the 1950s.

My mother left Ireland in 1957 to take a chance that the family she would work for were really what the agency said they were on the "hiring" notice.

This is what made America great. The GOP has abandoned its moral compass for something as ephemeral as tax cuts and they’ve done it on the backs of the powerless.

American farmers depend on undocumented workers. Restaurants…

Recent studies — and recent news stories — make clear the interest in and value of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are driven less by actual substance and more by the excesses of the media, social or otherwise.

Platforms like Twitter, Reddit — and “it” crypto social messaging app, Telegram — work as megaphones for often badly conceived ideas, barely substantiated claims and more than a little disagreement between evangelists and skeptics.

In the era of peak-influencer marketing where a couple of well-placed comments can engage and enrage partisans from all sides it shouldn’t be a surprise there’s a financial bubble as…
